“It used to be that big chains had to sell the same products in every store,” said food industry analyst Phil Lempert. “A small manufacturer can’t just make their product for one store. But now there’s more customization because different neighborhoods have different needs.”
For example, Santa Cruz Chili & Spice Co. Products are available at Walmart, Bashas, Food City, Safeway, and Fry’s Food Stores in major Hispanic areas of the city.
“Obviously, the best place to get the product is where the demand is high,” said Jean England Neubauer, owner of a Tumakori spice company.

Still, retailers continue to struggle to get their goods into the big chains, said retail research firm DSR Marketing Systems Inc., said David Rogers, president of the organization.
Rogers calls the tradition of big grocers paying for shelves a “chronic weakness of the American supermarket industry.” He said there was too much focus on manufacturers and distributors and less on consumers.
Both Rogers and Lempert see Whole Foods as a leader in the trend to cater to local and small vendors.

This renovation doubled the size of the store while preserving the architectural landmark of the community. on Wednesday, August 27 at 1:00 a.m.
A large tavern-style restaurant with an outdoor patio, local produce, a Health Starts Here™ salad and a never-before-seen selection of 24 beers, including at least 12 local beers. .
In true eco style, every effort was made during the reconstruction to reuse the materials and aesthetics of the original structure. For example, above the bar area, it was beautifully designed using exposed, reclaimed wooden beams from the original building.

“We are reopening our doors at Oracle and are proud to showcase the changes we have made in Tucson to offer a complete culinary destination,” said Scott Holmes, Whole Foods Market Oracle store team leader. “We’ve nearly doubled the size of our stores and hired more than 100 new team members from the community to bring healthy food and livelihood to the people of Tucson, Marana and the surrounding Oro Valley.”
