This is the 18th location of the fast food chain, which offers a mix of foods from countries such as Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador, Venezuela and Colombia.

“We make our food fresh every day, the way it should be. From the meat cakes used for arepas and gorditas to stuffed empanadas, stews, grilled carne asada and our signature sauces,” said Dalton Espaillat, founder and owner of Raydal Hospitality, the group behind Sabor Latin Street Grill, La Caseta and Three Amigos Mexican Grill. & Dining room.

Espaillat was born in the Dominican Republic and opened the first Sabor in Charlotte in 2013. “I’m a civil engineer and I wanted to start a concrete construction company. For this I needed some kind of cash flow business. Then I came across a restaurant, a Mexican restaurant on Central Avenue (in Charlotte) that I opened with two partners,” he said.

That was in 2010 and the restaurant was Three Amigos Mexican Grill & Cantina, which still exists. The partners left and Espaillat’s family stepped in to make it a success. Espaillat forgot about construction.

He then set out to find a simple concept with fresh ingredients that he could replicate in different locations. That’s when he started thinking about the street food of his native country.

“The Dominican Republic is like a melting pot of all these Latin American countries. I said, “Let’s bring the food we eat on the street.” That was the beginning of the concept. So we sell a lot of tacos and burritos, but we try to have food for every country in Latin America.”

The company now has restaurants in areas such as Mooresville, Huntersville and Fort Mill, S.C. The Winston-Salem location is the farthest from Charlotte to date, with the exception of Greenville, S.C.

The menu includes tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, bowls, and several Latin American street food favorites. The latter include arepas traditional ($5.95), popular in Colombia and Venezuela; empanadas ($3.95), popular throughout South America; and Mexican gorditas ($6.95) and quesabirrias ($10 for two). Also available are yuca Salvador chips ($7.95) topped with ground chicken, cheese and more. Diners can also find fried sweet bananas and churros with cinnamon on the menu.

Burritos ($8.49 to $9.95) include the El Dominicano with shredded chicken, cabbage and more and the Sabor Especial with a choice of egg whites, rice, beans, sour cream, pice de gallo, guacamole, lettuce and queso.

Bowls include Cuban with barbacoa, shredded chicken, black beans, plantain and two types of rice ($10.95) and Avocado Quinoa with Aztec rice mix quinoa, avocado, grilled vegetables, cilantro and chimichurri yogurt ($8.95).

All bowls, tacos and burritos can be customized. Customers can get any of the following: ground beef, ground chicken, grilled chicken, black beans, grilled vegetable chorizo, pulled pork al pastor, and tofu ranchero—or for a small extra charge, grilled steak, barbacoa, pork belly, grilled shrimp or grilled fish.

The restaurant also sells family meals and offers daily specials, including $1.49 tacos on Tuesdays, free kids meals on Wednesdays and $6 margaritas on Saturdays. (Although the Winston-Salem location does not yet have an ABC liquor license.)

Sabor Serves Up Latin Street Food On Miller In Winston Salem

Espaillat said he has wanted to expand into Winston-Salem for some time. “There’s been a big influx of [Latino] immigrants to Winston-Salem, so a lot of people are already familiar with the food,” she said.

He said he was pleasantly surprised, if surprised, to find that Winston-Salem customers were ordering some of his favorite street foods and not so much tacos and burritos. “One day we ran out of arepas and empanadas within an hour. I didn’t expect that,” he said.

Sabor wants to expand further this year. Espaillat said he has a location leased in Durham and is looking at locations in Greensboro and Raleigh.

Harris Teeter was founded by William Thomas Harris and Willis L. Teeter, two entrepreneurs who started their own businesses in Charlotte, North Carolina during the Great Depression. Harris opened a full-service pharmacy called Harris Drugs and Teeter opened Teeters Food Mart,

Harris, an employee of the A&P store at Ctral and Pecan Avues, Charlotte’s first grocery store, borrowed money in 1936 to open Harris Super Market at 1704 Ctral Avue.

The store had eight employees, most of whom sold dry foods, as frozen foods and refrigeration did not become common until after World War II. The family and its employees knew it as the #1 store. This store, later known as Harris Teeter store #201, closed on June 5, 2012, and was replaced by a two-story store #401 at the same location, which opened on May 29, 2013.

Harris’s store was the first in North Carolina to allow customers to select groceries from the shelves. Previously, customers would hand over a shopping list to a clerk who would pick out groceries for the customers. The store was also open until 9 p.m. on Fridays, when most supermarkets close at 5 p.m. This was done to appeal to working families and record their purchases after the payday on Friday. Later, Harris Super Market was the first grocery store in Charlotte to add air conditioning.

Harris also operated his own dairy farm and sold his dairy products in his stores. For his wife, LaVerne, the dairy products carried the Vernedale Farms brand. Harris pioneered the first dairy cooperative among local dairy farmers. After leading the cooperative for several years, he negotiated its sale to Pet Dairy.

Harris Super Markets began primarily as a family business. Most of the Harris siblings were employees, and brothers and brothers-in-law were store managers. His sister Sarah ran the accounting department and his wife’s sister was Harris’s personal secretary. His son, Donald Thomas Harris, began sweeping floors for the company at the age of eight.
